Steampunk – a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery – is an example of blurring the boundaries between functional and decorative elements.
The concept of the stadium proposal was inspired by a visit to the construction site of Beijing Galaxy Soho in 2011. I was a long-term fan of Zaha Hadid. I pictured her vision as levitated, free of the physical boundaries. However, my thought was brought to the ground when I saw a thick, vertical column inside an unfinished curved wall. The complete separation of the structure from the “skin” shows the strong connection architecture has to the real world of human beings: finance, technology, politics, etc. It is a kind of art that has the most limitations. Steampunk culture, on the other hand, imagines a world with limitless resources and unbounded design power. This sports stadium design is one possible result.
